Use of Stereotypes in comics



Today we live on a world of change. We live on an era that denies stereotypes and pushes forward innovation every day. This is no exception with comics. It is clear that the use of stereotypes has progressed throughout the medium. Personally, I find myself reading comics with strong female protagonists all the time. This I think is because growing up I would mainly see male protagonists all the time so its refreshing to see something different. One comic I’ve been reading recently that breaks a lot of stereotypes is Ava‘s Demon. This is a web comic that has a lead female character that is completely insecure about herself. I guess in a way I identify with the character, which is nice because the stereotypical male character is something I can’t really identify with. Overall I think The use of stereotypes has progressed for the better and that soon this will be an industry where stereotypes are nonexistent.

Web Comics

For this week, although I already wrote about Ava’s demon on this blog, I will write about it again. This week’s topic is “web comics”, and I think Ava’s demos is the perfect piece of work to talk about. Specially since its constantly updating.  Ava’s in one of the web comics with the best artwork out there I think. All of the panels are completely rendered, this makes it beautiful to look at. It also does not follow a regular web comic format. The panels are individual images, so thing like “the gutter” are completely absent. I think one of the downsides from web comics is that you don’t get a scheduled update. It all depends on the author’s personal life and weather or not they have enough time to draw anything. Overall I still think Ava’s is a great read, this medium allowed to become well known by its own, which is exactly what makes web comics such a popular medium now days

Thoughts on: The Arrival

The Arrival is a wonderful play on immigration. It paints a world that is completely new to any human and that is completely enchanting thanks to the magnetic creatures that live on it. This is particularly appealing sine it crates an element that all immigrants have to deal with: diving unto the unknown. The plot follows an adult male that leaves behind his daughter and wife so he can immigrate into another country. This is done with the goal of supporting his family financially. During his stay, he meets different immigrants and we get to learn their stories as well. It is absolutely amazing that all of this can be simply communicated with just images and no text at all. Not to mention that this is accomplished with absolutely stunning artwork. Overall it was a wonderful charming story that puts the reader in the shoes of an immigrant while showcasing mind blowing Illustrations.

Women's Comics

For this week I decided to read “Diary of a Dominatrix”. How could you not? Specially with a title like that. This read was everything and nothing that I was expecting. I thought this comic would be all abut humanizing a dominatrix, which it is. But its also like a tutorial on how to be one? I understand it mostly does this to give some insight, and even for the sake of comedy, but its still incredibly surprising and entertaining. The art is really nice as well, the author has a good way of picturing woman without giving them a “perfect body” but also make them extremely appealing. Overall this is definitely worth a read. I would recommend it to any stress filled college student that needs a break.
