Wide World of Comics


For this week I decided to read a French comic, the name of this comic is Sky Doll. The difference from American comics to French ones is striking. First of all, the artwork is drastically different. This tends t vary from artist to artist but European comics tend to be consistent on their detail artwork through the entire comic. The other mayor way they differ is with subject matter. European content tends to be more “Not Safe For Work”. Not that American comics are innocent all the time, but the French are definitely bolder. For example, Sky Doll is about a “Sex Doll” that is alive and wants to be treated like a “Human”. Already the basic plot of the comic feels different from Classic American Stories. This being said, the purpose of the comic is not to be grotesque. It explores interesting themes that are intriguing to read. Overall, European comics nor nor worse or better just different and definitely worth reading.

The Comic Strip

While reading several comic strips, there where a couple of things that captured my attention. The first thing, is the language that is used on them. It  might be my lack of knowledge, but the sentences are structured on ways that are difficult to understand. I mostly believe this is due to the time period, as most of the comics that are ready where written on the 1240's. The second thing that I notices is that they all seem to have a linear structure. This is something that I believe has changed with time. Current comics are way more dynamic and experimental when it comes to the positioning of images on a page. Lastly, I noticed they all have similar subject matter. with this i mean that they all deal with  mundane situations. There would be no fantasy, no mystery, just your normal human life with a small twist that is predictable most of the time. It was interesting reading all these old  comics strips and compare then to the comics we produce today.

Underground Comics

Reading underground comics was a shock. They are incredibly different from anything I have read until now. Of course this is mainly because of their subject manner. Compared to other regular comics, that try to be subtle when dealing with similar topics, Underground Comics are not afraid to be as explicit as possible. Something that I notices is that most of the art was quite rough. This appears to indicate that most of the writers where either young or new to comics. This means that the rise of this type of comic inspired new artist to create, which is amazing. Besides all of this, listening to music while reading some of this comics was like going on a time machine. It really helps you get a feel of the time. Overall I enjoyed the experience and I might keep reading this type of comics.

Comics as Contemporary Literature

This week I read Asterios Polyp by David Mazzucchelli. This was an absolutely amazing read, extremely different from comics and graphic novels I have read before. First of all, we have a male character that is 50 rears old. That by itself is unique. We do see male main characters very often but never ones that are this age. Also The use of color is extremely refreshing. It manages an interesting color palette that keeps thing graphic and utilizes colors to create depth. This is the first time I see this use of color on comics. Also the typography is absolutely bonkers. The author plays with the size of the fonts in order to give importance to a sentence. This feels like something irrelevant but makes the comic feel more like a conversation. Overall this comic was extremely enjoyable. Utilizing smart techniques that make this work stand out from others.
