The first reaction from “Pretty Deadly” was positive. But this is mostly because of the art that comes with the text. The art is beautiful and extremely appealing, but the text is extremely confusing. The imagery helps convey the general idea of what’s happening so the text is understandable, but I think it could be better. On the other hand, the subject matter is extremely interesting. This idea of the devil’s child is fun, but again, the text is very misleading and makes it difficult for me to be hooked on the story.

I made a number of connections with the story, mostly artistic. I notices the artist is making a lot of aesthetic decisions that I see myself making. By this I mean that the style this artist is going for is something that I particularly feel attracted to because its similar to my own. Also the use of color is extremely appealing and is being pushed in a way that I would like to use it. This leaves impact on me cause it’s a tool that is being used to communicate the story in the most efficient way possible. When it comes to pure, raw, plot, I didn’t make any connections with my personal life.


If I could, I would turn this Comic into an Animated movie. I think a 2d adaptation would be better in order to match the style, but 3d is also a good option. This would fix the text problem that I addressed earlier, forcing the story to be told mostly by a visual medium. Of course dialougue would still be there but the camera would “show us what is happening” instead of “describing it”. I don’t think I would make many changes to the story or the format. Everything is already there, from the amazing character designs to the harmonious color palettes. This comic is ready to become an animated feature.

The Comic Strip

While reading several comic strips, there where a couple of things that captured my attention. The first thing, is the language that is used on them. It  might be my lack of knowledge, but the sentences are structured on ways that are difficult to understand. I mostly believe this is due to the time period, as most of the comics that are ready where written on the 1240's. The second thing that I notices is that they all seem to have a linear structure. This is something that I believe has changed with time. Current comics are way more dynamic and experimental when it comes to the positioning of images on a page. Lastly, I noticed they all have similar subject matter. with this i mean that they all deal with  mundane situations. There would be no fantasy, no mystery, just your normal human life with a small twist that is predictable most of the time. It was interesting reading all these old  comics strips and compare then to the comics we produce today.

“Understanding Comics” by Scott McCloud

When reading “Understanding Comics” by Scott McCloud I found several connections related to my major. The one the stood out the most was the simplification of the cartoon. How we create Icons so that they are easier to Identify, specifically with humans. Creating a cartoon looking individual not only makes it easier to read, but also makes people identify with what they are seeing. When explaining this, he also mentions that we can create extreme simplifications because the human face is basically trained to see faces everywhere. It is part of our instincts as we always try to relate to unknown things. This really resonated with me because it is exactly the topic that we are currently learning about on the Computer Animation major. We learn to take advantage of this ability that allows us to see things in different patterns and shapes. This helps us spark our creativity and create new thing by using a tool that we all have. Thoughts on: The Arrival

The Arrival is a wonderful play on immigration. It paints a world that is completely new to any human and that is completely enchanting thanks to the magnetic creatures that live on it. This is particularly appealing sine it crates an element that all immigrants have to deal with: diving unto the unknown. The plot follows an adult male that leaves behind his daughter and wife so he can immigrate into another country. This is done with the goal of supporting his family financially. During his stay, he meets different immigrants and we get to learn their stories as well. It is absolutely amazing that all of this can be simply communicated with just images and no text at all. Not to mention that this is accomplished with absolutely stunning artwork. Overall it was a wonderful charming story that puts the reader in the shoes of an immigrant while showcasing mind blowing Illustrations.
